Public lecture by Rebecca Barthelmie

Can climate change impact wind energy? Can wind energy impact climate change?

The public lecture takes place on Wednesday the 13th of November from 14:00-15:00

Location: Building 101, Room S01 at DTU Campus Lyngby

Lecture by:
Rebecca Barthelmie, Professor of Atmospheric Science and Sustainability, Indiana University

Abstract:
Experts agree that while it is still technically possible to limit global warming to 2ºC by the end of this century, this scenario is unlikely. What will this mean for sectors like wind energy that are impacted by weather-related variables? Will the wind resource or extreme winds change? At the same time as climate change occurs, we are employing technologies like wind energy to reduce carbon emissions and climate forcing. Does this work? How much electricity can we really generate from wind? How big can wind farms really be? What are the technical constraints and how much impact will deploying wind energy have on atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations? This presentation will focus on the links and impacts of climate change on wind energy and vice versa.
