Weather forecasters, power forecasters, and end users in forecasting of wind power got a new forum: IEA Wind Task 36 Forecasting for Wind Power. The Task is going to coordinate research, communicate progress, agree on common definitions and error measures, benchmark different approaches, and disseminate best practice among users. The new forum is part of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Energy Technology Initiatives network.
With the installed capacity of wind power growing world-wide, accurate forecasts are of paramount importance for grid stability and well-functioning electricity markets. Therefore, on the background of continuous research and application since the 1990s, a number of large research projects were started in forecasting recently, most notably the Wind Forecast Improvement Project in the U.S., and EWeLINE in Germany. Smaller national projects complement the picture.
“We had a number of regional discussion fora and collaborations, especially in Europe and the U.S. but this is the first time that we connect wind forecasters, power forecasters and end users globally. I’m looking forward to seeing coordination in the acquisition and exchange of data sets, and in the establishment and dissemination of best practice in the use of the forecasts, in order to bring out the best value for the end users. Therefore I’m looking forward to welcome many stakeholders at the kick-off—‘old hands’ and newcomers alike,” says Gregor Giebel from DTU Wind Energy who is the Operating Agent of the Task.
The kick-off meeting of the Task is going to be on 27-28 January 2016 at DTU Risø Campus in Denmark. Participation is sought from stakeholders in the countries of the IEA Wind Technology Initiative, please see ieawind.org for a complete list.
