2018 became a record year for the establishment of wind turbines in Europe. That many wind turbines have never been established in Europe in one year, new figures from WindEurope show.

In 2018 wind farms with a total capacity of 16,7 GW were set up in Europe. That is a new record. Concurrently, new figures from WindEurope show that wind energy accounts for 60 per cent of all of the recently established production of energy.

Head of Department at DTU Wind Energy, Peter Hauge Madsen, sees positively at the development:

“The ongoing focus at wind energy in Europe and the establishment of new wind farms is gratifying”, he says and clarifies:

”Europe has got an important part to play in running the development and setting an example of a more sustainable energy supply.”

Lower prices for wind energy

The figures from WindEurope show investments in wind farms of 27 billion euro. This equals a bit more than 200 billion DKK.

Compared to earlier you now get more wind energy for your money. In 2018 1 MW on shore wind energy was averagely 1,4m euro. In 2015 it was 2m euro. When looking at offshore wind turbines, 1 MW was 2,5 m euro in 2018 – compared to a price of 4,5m euro in 2015.
