IEEE/PES lecture by Prof. dr. Sergio Vazquez: Recent advances in model predictive control of power converters and drives

IEEE fellow Prof. dr. Sergio Vazquez from the University of Seville will speak about “Recent advances in model predictive control of power converters and drives” – a topic which for a long time has been focus of interest in academia due to many superior characteristics of MPC compared to legacy control methods (fast dynamics, excellent robustness, embedding system constraints).
In last several years, MPC has also gained interest from the industry – where one very well-known application is by ABB for high-power drives.
The group at DTU works substantially on this topic, too – from control of grid-tied AFEs and electric drives, to EV chargers.

Sergio Vazquez (Fellow, IEEE) was born in Seville, Spain, in 1974. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering from the University of Seville (US), Seville, Spain, in 2006 and 2010, respectively. Since 2002, he is with the Power Electronics Group working in R&D projects. He is a Professor with the Department of Electronic Engineering, US. His research interests include power electronics systems, modeling, modulation and control of power electronics converters applied to renewable energy technologies. Dr. Vazquez was a recipient as coauthor of the 2012 Best Paper Award of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS and 2015 Best Paper Award of the IEEE INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS MAGAZINE. He is involved in the Energy Storage Technical Committee of the IEEE industrial electronics society and is currently serving as an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS.
